Summary:
This is a very good lens and can make remarkable shots if you have found a good sample. I Hook mine up on an Nikon D1 H and shoot away; the results is on par with my Pro Nikon 35-70 2,8D and i think its 92 % close to this lens. It does not have The >D on it,and therefore it overexposes quite a lot when using flash;;; instead i find out that i rotate the flash head bouncing backwards(with a Stofen box mounted) > VOILA> the Pics(using flash SB 600 and SB 800) is spot ON. This Lens is made in japan and its the same best buy as the Nikon 70-210 D and a little up in the class of the excellent 85 1,8D but not in the same league as for instance Nikkor 50 mm 1,8 or the marvellous Nikkor 60 mm 2,8 Macro.Or the new ED EX FG DS VR DX Super bla bla and so on.. The Nikkor 28-85 is a little hard to fine and it is a perfect beginner to high end pro lens and a good lens also for PRO work IF you know how to use it..(stop it down a little ) BUT my sample is even sharp at 3,5 wide open,and therfore i use it for PJ work(portraits and alike) IM more than satiesfied for the money invested! remember its the person(nality( behind the cam that makes the pic

Summary:
Results from using on a digital SLR: Excellent balanced saturation and contrast. Centre, nice and crisp at all apertures. Edges, softer if wider than f11 (will never quite match centre at any aperture). Softness of edges can have a very slight directional effect radiating from centre (like 'zoom blur' in Photoshop). No light fall-off (helped by the fact that a DSLR uses only 2/3rds of the 35mm area). Notieable but not offensive chromatic aberration at edges if high contrast (ie. blue fringing around fine detail against a bright sky like tree branches)irrespective of focal length. Probably a typical consumer zoom, fine for use if you are out for the day and don't want to carry other lenses around. Certainly not a replacement for prime lenses if you need to resolve fine detail across the whole frame.
