After the success of her Greatest Hits Ballad Compilation “Something to remember”, the world was curious to witness Madonna’s role as Eva Perón in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Evita” and she didn’t dissapoint. A certified workaholic and perfectionist, Madonna poured every inch of her passion into this character and delivered the best acting performance of her career. It didn’t go unnoticed, as she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
Madonna recorded the entire soundtrack to the movie along with fellow cast members Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce and Jimmy Nail, but in every right it can be considered a Madonna album, as the majority of the songs are performed by her. The soundtrack was a surprise success. Starting slow on its debut, it peaked at #6 and started falling down the charts, but after 10 weeks on the charts, it gained a new peak at #2, staying there for 2 weeks, and a total of 30 weeks on the Billboard 200. The soundtrack’s performance in the UK went trought the same motions, off to a slow start at #7, it gained notoriety after the release of “Don’t cry for me Argentina”, and on its thirteenth week it went straight to number one.
One new song was recorded for the film’s soundtrack, the ballad “You must love me” that reunited Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for the first time in eleven years. The song enden up winning both the Academy Award as well as The Golden Globe for Best Original Song, becoming the second song performed by Madonna to win both awards. Madonna had sessions with a vocal coach to prepare for the role, and she displays a new deep and versatile voice in the soundtrack, that surprised both audiences and critics alike.
The R.I.A.A. recognizes the soundtrack as a Madonna album and being a double album and over 100 minutes long, every shipment counts twice. With shipments of over 2.5 million copies, it was certified 5xPlatinum and counting in Madonna’s tally. To celebrate the video release of Evita in 1997, a different one CD version was released that peaked at a more discreet #167 and spending only 4 weeks on the charts.
