Antique 17th-century Flemish painting. Oil on panel artwork depicting the biblical scene of the casting of lots for Christ's tunic. The soldiers, after crucifying Jesus, took his clothes and cast dice for them at the foot of the cross. The artwork has been attributed by art historian Fred Meijer, an expert on Dutch art, to the Flemish painter known as the "Monogrammist H.C."

This artist, active in the Netherlands in the 17th century and known for his genre scenes, is identified as the signature of the Antwerp artist Willem Van Herp (1614-1677). (The painting is currently not accompanied by an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs.) The painting combines the emotional power of the Flemish tradition with an intense Baroque atmosphere.

A painting of remarkable pictorial quality, ideal for a refined collector of early Nordic paintings. This painting, small in size and easily positionable, is perfect for a private study or library. 20th-century carved and gilded wooden frame, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with new parquetry on the back and recoloring in small spots. Overall, in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 60 x W 41 cm.
