Katrina Leskanich nace en la localidad estadounidense de Topeka en Kansas, hija de un militar de las fuerzas aéreas americanas condecorado en Vietnam y una madre que dejó su carrera circense para dedicarse a la familia, compuesta por Katrina y sus otros cinco hermanos. En la mitad de los años 70, se mudan al Reino Unido, donde Katrina comienza su carrera musical al conocer en 1979 a Vince de la Cruz en el coro de la iglesia donde cantaba su madre. Junto a él y a Alex Cooper (graduado en batería por la Universidad de Cambridge), fundan ese mismo año Katrina and the Waves. The Waves viene del título de un libro de Virginia Woolf, de quien Alex Cooper es pariente lejano. En 1981, Kimberley Rew se une a la banda (en realidad él ya había tocado en un grupo con Alex Cooper, llamado ya The Waves en los 70) y se lanzan en el mercado pop-rock británico de los primeros 80. Editan dos discos hasta que les llega el éxito absoluto en 1985 con la canción Walking on Sunshine con la que son nominados a los Grammy. A partir de ese momento su nombre entra por siempre en la historia del pop-rock británico de los 80’s. Su productor de la época, sería con los años el productor de R.E.M.. Aprovechando la repercusión mundial y la fama conseguida con la canción, editan otro disco del mismo estilo a finales de 1985 llamado The Waves y aunque tienen éxito, no igualan en ventas al precedente. Waves is the fourth album by new wave band Katrina and the Waves, released in 1985.

One of the greatest one-hit wonders of the 1980s, Katrina and the Waves were on top of the world after "Walking on Sunshine" in 1985, one of the finest pop singles of the decade. The group recorded their follow-up album in early 1986, and although it's not a disaster by any stretch, it certainly falls short of their awesome debut. Part of this, to be sure, is due to the fact that songwriter/lead guitarist Kimberly Rew takes a back seat to the other band members in the composing area. It's a bit sad, not only because Rew had true talent (such excellent songs on the debut as "Goin' Down to Liverpool," "Red Wine & Whisky" and the aforementioned "Sunshine" were his), but also because the plain fact is that lead singer Katrina Leskanich and the other members just were not really close to his level of pop songwriting. There are some fine moments, however, such as the infectious "Sun Street" and "Tears for Me." Rew's two songs, "Is That It" and "Lovely Lindsay," are mini-masterpieces, and eventually push the group and this album somewhere near the goal line.
