Pierre Bachelet and Hervé Roy's score to the 1974 softcore smash Emmanuelle is both more sophisticated and more banal than your average stroke-film soundtrack. On the one hand, the composers strive for a complexity and intimacy largely absent from the genre. But on the other hand, Emmanuelle is too cerebral and refined for its own good. Listeners anticipating the boom-chicka-bow-bow lunacy that makes '70s porn music so wonderful will be sorely disappointed by the relative absence of such debauchery.
