The Cure – The Top (35117-25)

- was released in May 1984 as The Cure's fifth studio album. It was created during a period in which Robert Smith was essentially carrying the band on his own – Simon Gallup had left the group after the controversial Pornography (1982), and Smith was also active with Siouxsie and the Banshees and their side project The Glove.

This double and triple burden led to Smith writing most of the songs and recording large portions himself.

The Top is considered one of the band's most experimental albums. It blends influences from psychedelia, post-punk, pop, oriental scales, and even hard rock elements.

The Top is an unusual, at times chaotic, but highly interesting album – somewhere between a solo experiment by Robert Smith and a bridge to the great successes of the late 80s.
