Born in London in 1941, Watts joined the Rolling Stones in 1963 and stayed with them until his death in 2021. In contrast to the wild lifestyle of his bandmates, Charlie was known for his love of suits, jazz records and a stable personal life - he was married to his wife Shirley for over 50 years.

Outside the Stones, he explored jazz extensively and led the Charlie Watts Orchestra and Quintet.

Even as rock drummers became more sophisticated and flashy, Watts remained true to his signature approach: solid, no-frills drumming that always served the song.

His influence on rock music is undeniable, influencing generations of drummers with his impeccable timing and taste.
