Today the chess world is compartmentalized.
We have tournament players and casual players, problem fans and endgame enthusiasts. The time may come when we will be further divided into 1.e4 players and 1.d4 players -- with separate magazines and tournaments.
But in the previous century, players enjoyed all aspects of chess -- tournaments, problems, endgame compositions, whatever. And they also had something else in common: they all appreciated Sam Loyd, the superstar of chess problems.
