The English Satirical Print, 1600 - 1832 - Caricatures and the Constitution, 1760 - 1832- H.T. Dickinson

H.T. Dickinson assesses the satirical prints of the time and their value as a historical source.  He shows that while ridiculing the failings of the governing elite and the corruption endemic in the prevailing system of political representation, the caricatures did not endorse popular revolution or democratic constitutional reforms; that most caricaturists spoke to and for that respectable body of opinion which wanted to redress obvious political abuses, but did not wish to overturn the whole constitution.
